What this tool does

This tool composites an image over a solid colour you choose. It is most useful for PNG files that already have transparency: the transparent pixels are filled with the colour, and the subject remains untouched. You can use it to produce a passport-white background, a blue background for a profile picture, or a black background for a product shot.

For an ordinary photo with an opaque background, the tool also provides a one-click AI background remover that creates a transparent cutout first, and then applies the colour you pick.

When you need AI background removal first

If you upload a normal JPG from a camera, the background is not transparent — it is a real colour (sky, wall, floor). Simply applying a colour on top of a JPG would cover the entire image, not just the background. To replace a photo's background, you need to remove it first. Click Remove photo background, wait for the AI model to finish (first use downloads the model), then click Apply background colour.

Solid colour vs transparency

A transparent PNG is a cutout with no background at all: whatever it is placed on shows through. A solid colour background is an opaque fill. Use transparency when you want to place the cutout on different backgrounds later; use a solid colour when you are producing a final image with a specific required background.

Making a passport-white background

Passport photos usually require a plain white (#FFFFFF) background. Load your photo, click Remove photo background, set the colour picker to pure white, and click Apply background colour. Then use the Passport Photo Maker to crop to the exact print size.

Common questions

Does this work on JPGs? Only after removing the background first. Applying a colour to a JPG without removing the background fills the whole image.

Is my image uploaded? No. Everything is processed in your browser.

Can I pick any colour? Yes — use the colour picker or type a hex value. The four quick swatches cover the most common passport colours.
