What this tool does

Cropping removes the edges of an image so that only the region you specify remains. It is the standard way to remove distracting areas, reframe a portrait, or make an image fit a required shape (a square profile picture, a 16:9 video thumbnail, a 2:3 print). The cropper here takes a numeric rectangle in original-image pixels so that you can aim it precisely.

How to crop an image

  1. Choose an image from your device.
  2. Enter the crop rectangle: X and Y are the top-left corner; Width and Height define the size of the cut.
  3. Or pick an aspect-ratio preset and the tool adjusts the width and height for you.
  4. Press Crop image — the preview shows the cropped result.
  5. Click Download to save the new PNG.

Aspect ratio presets

A square (1:1) is used for profile pictures and Instagram posts. 4:3 and 16:9 are standard for cameras and video thumbnails. 3:4 and 2:3 portrait are used for prints and book covers. Picking a preset keeps the crop from distorting your subject; the numeric rectangle is recalculated from the current width.

Cropping for passports and ID photos

Passport and visa photos require specific head size and position, not just an aspect ratio. If you need a passport photo, use our dedicated Passport Photo Maker, which centre-crops to the exact millimetre size and builds an A4 print sheet. The cropper here is the general-purpose tool.

Common questions

Does cropping reduce quality? No. The crop keeps the original pixels inside the rectangle, so the cropped image is exactly as sharp as the original in that region.

Can I crop to a shape other than a rectangle? Not in this tool. Cropping to circles, polygons or freeform shapes requires a mask, which is best done in a full image editor.

Is the image uploaded? No — everything is local to your browser.
